Background of the Study
Indigenous languages are a critical component of cultural heritage and identity; however, many of these languages face the threat of extinction due to globalization and the dominance of major languages. At Kano State Polytechnic in Kano, digital art is being explored as a novel medium for preserving and revitalizing indigenous languages. Digital art encompasses various forms of visual expression, including digital illustrations, animations, and interactive media, which can capture and convey the rich cultural narratives embedded in indigenous languages (Ibrahim, 2023). By integrating traditional linguistic elements with modern digital techniques, educators and artists can create engaging digital artifacts that serve both as educational resources and as repositories of cultural heritage. This innovative approach allows for the visual representation of folklore, proverbs, and oral histories, making them accessible to younger generations who are more attuned to digital media. Recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of digital art in promoting cultural awareness and linguistic preservation by fostering a deeper connection between traditional knowledge and contemporary expressions (Chinwe, 2024). The use of digital art not only aids in documenting indigenous languages but also provides a platform for creative reinterpretation and cultural expression. The project will evaluate how digital art can be harnessed to enhance language learning, increase community engagement, and contribute to the long-term preservation of indigenous linguistic traditions. It will also explore the role of digital platforms in disseminating these artistic works to a broader audience, thereby raising awareness about the importance of linguistic diversity and cultural heritage.
Statement of the Problem
Indigenous languages in Nigeria are facing significant decline due to factors such as urbanization, globalization, and the prevalence of dominant languages in formal education and media. At Kano State Polytechnic, traditional methods of language preservation, such as oral transmission and written documentation, have proven insufficient in engaging younger generations and ensuring long-term sustainability (Ibrahim, 2023). The lack of innovative and engaging approaches has led to reduced interest among youth in learning and using indigenous languages, further accelerating their erosion. Although digital art has the potential to serve as a powerful tool for cultural preservation, its application in language preservation is still nascent. Challenges such as limited digital literacy, inadequate funding, and a lack of culturally relevant content hinder the effective use of digital art for preserving indigenous languages (Chinwe, 2024). This study aims to address these challenges by investigating how digital art can be strategically employed to document and promote indigenous languages at Kano State Polytechnic. It will examine the effectiveness of digital art projects in increasing language awareness and usage among students, as well as the barriers to their successful implementation. The research will provide empirical evidence on the impact of digital art initiatives on cultural preservation and propose strategies for integrating digital art into indigenous language curricula, ensuring that these languages remain vibrant and relevant in a digital era.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the innovative use of digital art to preserve and revitalize indigenous languages, ensuring cultural continuity and heritage protection (Ibrahim, 2023). The insights will guide educators and policymakers in Kano on integrating modern digital tools to foster linguistic diversity and cultural awareness among youth (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the use of digital art in preserving indigenous languages at Kano State Polytechnic, Kano, Kano State, focusing solely on digital art initiatives and their cultural impact.
